TOP Games of All Time (2024) 30-21

TOP 30 - 21

  1. Clans of Caledonia

Publisher: Karma Games

Players: 1-4

Playing Time: 30-120 minutes

Mechanisms: Commodity Speculation, Contracts, Market, Variable Player Powers

I love games that offer buying and selling goods. The original theme does put this game in a special place in the »farming euro games« that are available to board gamers.

  1. World of Yo-Ho

Publisher: IELLO

Players: 2-4

Playing Time: 45-90 minutes

Mechanisms: Grid Movement, Variable Player Powers

Sleeves: STN 57,5x89mm

This game is one big gimmick.. but everybody needs such a game in their collection. Pirating around the seas with a phone instead of a wooden miniature? Getting nice graphics when fighting other players or monsters? This game has it all and is easy enough that the gimmick doesn't get in the way of »serious gaming«.

  1. Dungeons, Dice & Danger

Publisher: Alea

Players: 1-4

Playing Time: 45-60 minutes

Mechanisms: Roll&Write

I'm not a fan of roll and writes.. they don't offer enough »game« for my taste, but this one is an exception to the rule. It lasts just long enough that you actually start feeling some consequences of your decisions and yet finishes in time that it's not a boring math excercise.

  1. Merchants Cove

Publisher: Final Frontier Games

Players: 1-4

Playing Time: 60-90 minutes

Mechanisms: Commodity Speculation, Dice Rolling, Variable Player Powers, Worker Placement

Sleeves: MEV 44x63mm, TCG 63,5x88mm

I love games that put players into different roles with different play styles and manage to keep the players engaged. Each role is a totally different and interesting. Some are harder than others but non of them are boring.

  1. 7 Wonders: Duel

Publisher: Repos Production

Players: 2

Playing Time: 30 minutes

Mechanisms: Dueling Game, Open Drafting, Set Collection, Tug of War

Sleeves: MEU 45x68mm, BUS 65x100mm

One of the best 2P games out there. End of story.

Players are drafting cards to build up their civilisation and at the same time 2 different tug-of-wars are going on, where a player can win the game straight out. Players will be on their toes the whole game, testing the waters on different fronts.

  1. Dorfromantik: The Board Game

Publisher: Pegasus Spiele

Players: 1-6

Playing Time: 30-60 minutes

Mechanisms: Cooperative Game, Tile Placement, Scenario / Campaign Game

Sleeves: EUR 59x92mm

I'm not the biggest fan of tile laying games and I almost gave up on this mechanism. I'm not saying that Dorfromantik brought this genre back, but I can now see a light at the end of the tunnel.

I really like the puzzle-ly twist to the mechanism where players cooperate and plan ahead (much ahead sometimes) to get the best score.

I don't see my self playing this game as an one off, but I do plan to play a 2nd campaign somewhere in the future.

  1. Marvel Zombies: A Zombicide Game

Publisher: CMON

Players: 1-6

Playing Time: 60 minutes

Mechanisms: Cooperative Game, Dice Rolling, Scenarion / Campaign Game,  Solo Game

Sleeves: MUS 41x63mm, BLC 70x110mm

Zombicide games got same-y and our group lost interest in the generic versions that were coming out.

I bought this version for the miniatures mostly but after trying it, it is now my prefered version. Kids love the superhero theme while adults love the much more streamlined gameplay. Definitely the best Zombicide in my book.

  1. It's a Wonderful World

Publisher: La Boite de Jeu

Players: 1-5

Playing Time: 45 minutes

Mechanisms: Closed Drafting, Hand Management, Simultaneous Action Selection, Set Collection, Variable Player Powers

Sleeves: BUS 65x100mm

I love games where you build your engine of resources giving, combo making stacks of cards.. It just gives me such a joy.

The only problem is to find another person that would play this type of games as much as I would like to.

  1. Raiders of the North Sea

Publisher: Garphill Games

Players: 2-4

Playing Time: 60-80 minutes

Mechanisms: Contracts, Dice Rolling, Hand Management, Worker Placement

Sleeves: SWK 54x86mm

I was very late to try this game .. and I'm so sorry that I missed on such a great game. The placing of a worker for an action and removing one for another action sounds like a boring thing to do.. but oh it improves so much the standard worker placement mechanism.

The big selection of crew members that create combos and drive your tactics is also a very nice fun part of the game.

  1. Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure

Publisher: Renegade Games Studios

Players: 2-4

Playing Time: 30-60 minutes

Mechanisms: Deck Building, Open Drafting, Push your Luck,

Sleeves: TCG 63,5x88mm

Clank is a great deck building game on it's own. I play it every chance that I get…but it wouldn't be this high on the TOP list without the legacy version. We loved the changes that the legacy system provided and the new additions to the deck from game to game.
